Language is one of the most important aspects of mental wellbeing, and the way we talk about mental health can go a long way in reducing the mental health stigma. This recurring feature on the blog looks at different words and phrases I use when talking about my mental health. I know other people use this language too, and defining some of the more relatable terms can help others understand their meanings instead of constantly explaining them. Today I am talking about the term screaming magic.

What is a screeching spell?

First of all, it should be noted that crying is an everyday thing. People cry for many reasons, and it’s a healthy way to express positive and negative emotions. Crying is not the same as crying. While not a specific medical term, Healthline put it succinctly:

Sometimes you may cry a lot more than you want or for no apparent reason.

There are spectra of how often and how little people cry, and wine spells refer to situations in which you cry more often than usual for apparently no reason. Crying fits are a common symptom of depression and can also occur when people experience anxiety and stress, when they experience exhaustion or pregnancy, or when they have bipolar disorder.

One important thing to keep in mind about wine spells is that their frequency is only relevant to the person who is experiencing them. There’s nothing wrong with crying more than average, but if you catch yourself crying a lot more than you normally do, it can be a sign that you are checking in yourself. People often don’t realize their stress or anxiety until the dam breaks, and crying bouts can be a clear sign that some emotions need to be let out.

It’s okay to ask for help

Now that we know what cheek spells are, how can we fight them? First of all, it’s important to understand that not everyone is comfortable with this type of emotional output. Whether you’re the one crying or someone is trying to lean on you, crying can make people uncomfortable. Just as you would not treat everyone with mental illness the same, you cannot treat everyone with crying fits equally.

There are many obstacles that can stand in the way of asking for help when you are suffering from crying fits. Embarrassment, confusion, avoidance, and shame are common reactions in this situation. I have had recurring fits of crying for almost a decade, and I still cramp the first time I tell someone about it. But there can be so much comfort on the other side of this hill, because as painful as it can be to tell someone, you can find support or help on the other side.

Searing spells can come and go for all kinds of reasons, and that can be scary. But the more we talk about and break down these ideas, the easier it is for the next person to complete this challenge or overcome this obstacle on their own mental health journey.
