Portland protester who was filmed beating man unconscious is sentenced to nearly 2 years in jail

  • Marquise Love, 26, was given 20 months in jail for the brutal viral video attack
  • He will also serve 36 months probation and have an alcohol abuse evaluation
  • He apologised to Adam Haner, who was left with two black eyes and bruises

A Portland protester who was filmed beating another man unconscious during a demonstration has been sentenced to 20 months in prison.

Marquise Love, 26, pleaded guilty to the charges of third-degree assault and felony riot, the Multnomah County District Attorney said on Monday.

He will also serve 36 months of probation and take part in an alcohol abuse evaluation, Fox News reported.

In the shocking footage of the brutal assault Love can be seen punching and kicking Adam Haner in the head after the man had accidentally gotten caught up in a Black Lives Matter protest in Portland, Oregon on August 16.

Haner crashed his pickup truck on a sidewalk near the rally before being pulled from the vehicle by BLM protesters who believed he had deliberately tried to hit them.

He was told to sit on the ground and ‘wait for police to arrive’ before Love started attacking him, eventually knocking Haner unconscious with a kick to the head.

Others ransacked Haner’s truck, claiming they were ‘checking for weapons’.

Love, 25, was sentenced on Monday to 20 months in jail with 36 months of probation and mandatory attendance at a alcohol abuse evaluation

The crash reportedly happened after Haner had stopped to help a transgender woman from being robbed.

His girlfriend Tammie Martin, who was with him at the time, said protesters had called Haner a ‘white supremacist’ and chased him, forcing him to make a speedy getaway in the truck, which he then crashed.

Haner was left with two black eyes and numerous bruises from the assault.

At the time of the attack, Love had a lengthy criminal record which included charges for domestic assault, domestic harassment and gun charges.

There were also charges of driving without a license and interfering with public transport.

He turned himself in to police after the video of the attack went viral, prompting a city-wide manhunt that lasted four days.

Multnomah Country District Attorney Mike Schmidt described the video of the assault as ‘violent and shocking,’ saying it had ‘outraged our community and nation.’

‘We are fortunate that the victim’s injuries were not as severe as it first appeared they may have been.’

Love (right) has since apologized to Haner (left) and wished him a speedy recovery, according to prosecutors. Authorities Haner wasn’t out for revenge and had said he hoped Love learned from the incident

Prosecutors said Love had expressed remorse, apologized to Haner and wished him well with his recovery.

For his part, Haner was not vengeful and said he hoped Love learned from what happened, according to authorities.

‘This is a proper resolution,’ Schmidt said.

‘Marquise Love is accepting responsibility for his actions and the punishment.’
