Hannah shares her top tips to keep your head clear during lockdown. Whether you are a student with ongoing coursework, upcoming exams, or a full 10,000 word dissertation that has not yet been written, it is important to always take care of yourself and allow time for self-sufficiency.

As we near the start of our third month of lockdown, like much of the world, we likely feel like we’ve exhausted all possible forms of entertainment and done all the DIY work we never knew needed to be done . Whether you are a student with ongoing coursework, upcoming exams, or a full 10,000 word dissertation that has not yet been written, it is important to always take care of yourself and allow time for self-sufficiency.

Research shows that there are five simple things we can do to improve our wellbeing. I want to focus on three that I find particularly important to my wellbeing, but which can be more difficult when locking: connecting, taking care, and learning new things. So, in no particular order, here are some fun things to do this week to keep you feeling comfortable despite the restrictions of lockdown and when you might have already made your third batch of banana bread for the day and all of the Dalgona coffees ever drink …

Connect

  • Book an AirBnB experience to connect with the world – just because we still need to keep our distance doesn’t mean we still can’t see the world! AirBnB still offers the option to book an “experience”. Take an online trip to see the Chernobyl dogs, partake in an Argentine tango dance, or learn about the history of gin and make your own homemade cocktails!

  • Netflix Marathon and Happy Hour to get in touch with friends – pick a friend, choose a series, choose a (daily ?!) time session that lets you watch every episode regularly! There is an option to download the Netflix Party extension for free to sync with multiple accounts at the same time. A group chat feature is embedded as a feature that you can use to post those comments and continue the conversation. Checking in with a close friend from home on a regular basis has kept me sane, and I think the by-product of that is that we are now near the end of ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ – which we would both recommend!

To take note of

  • Afternoon at the virtual art gallery to relax and take in the beauty of your surroundings – this is the type of afternoon excursion I look forward to! Currently, galleries like the Tate Modern are running short YouTube tours for curators like Andy Warhol, who helped shape modern pop culture, and Aubrey Beardsley, who was famous for his distinct black ink drawings and the rapid rise in fame before his sudden appearance on Death at the age of 25.

  • Stream a theater – thanks to technology, we can listen to the National Theater’s YouTube stream every Thursday with a free full-length play!

Learn new things

  • Make Disney’s Famous Food – Your home could become the happiest place in the world when you try Disney’s new recipes to make their famous churro bites and dole whips.

  • Learn Calligraphy – Platforms like SkillShare offer free courses for a limited time only! It’s the perfect opportunity to be tutored in the comfort of your home by some of the world’s most talented creatives.

We can often feel the unspoken pressure to stay busy, stay productive, and maximize all that newfound time. Sometimes this is necessary. But sometimes it’s okay to slow down and recharge yourself too. We must continue to take care of ourselves not only physically but also spiritually. Regular breaks and self-care can be beneficial for both wellbeing and productivity. One encouraging prospect that really struck me during this time is this: We cannot control the situation we are in, but we can control how we respond to it.
